The team at Nene Valley Crematorium have raised £15,000 for a local charity. The North Northants Council’s company operated crematorium serves the community of Wellingborough, and beyond.

A cheque was presented on Tuesday 28 June 2022 by the Manager, (on behalf of the Company’s Chair for the Board of Directors, Councillor Paul Bell) to Keith Brown, a volunteer representing the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire local Air Ambulance, who provide lifesaving services. The raised funds have already supported eight missions for this Air Ambulance service.

The Institute’s recycling scheme continues to grow in partnership with

“It's privilege to give this donation on behalf of Nene Valley Crematorium to Air Ambulance services, who provide an emergency service to people of Northamptonshire”.

WNAA Community Fundraising Executive, Ethan Hopkinson, commented:

“The support of our local communities is so important to our charity as we receive no government funding and rely solely on generous donations like these to remain operational. Each potentially lifesaving mission costs £1,700 so, on behalf of the charity, I’d like to say a huge thank you to the wonderful Nene Valley Crematorium which has helped fund over eight missions - our crews are available, 24/7, 365 days a year, and vital support like this means we can continue to deliver our lifesaving, frontline critical care to those who need it most across Northamptonshire.”

This year follows a former recent donation from the crematorium scheme to Marie Curie for £10,000 and a future donation for £12,000 has recently been agreed for ‘We Mind, Kelly Matters’.

“We feel privileged to be able to continue with nominating local charities to receive this level of donation funding, to enable them to utilise these funds for the benefit of our communities”.

The team at North Northamptonshire council’s Nene Valley Crematorium at Wellingborough are reaching out to persons who arranged a funeral between 23 March 2020 to 18 July 2021 inclusive. This is to establish if you would like to arrange a memorial service in commemoration of your loved one, at no cost to you, then we would like to hear from you.

Primarily we are providing this offering because we know that many people who would have attended a funeral could not be there, due to restrictions on permitted numbers because of Covid-19, and because it may just be that the memory of the funeral was just not as you would have liked it to be.

Manager at the crematorium, Tracy Lawrence, said: “To feel and see how grieving people have suffered throughout the pandemic because of restrictions surrounding saying goodbye at funerals has been beyond feeling so wrong for my team to deal with – to subsequently be part of providing an opportunity to bring people together for an event like a memorial service supports our “bereavement-led” ethos at Nene Valley Crematorium”.

If this feeling resonates with you, find out more about how to put this wrong right by arranging a memorial service in memory of your loved one for all those people who would like to pay their respects in person, then please contact a team member on

The cosmetic stage of the pathway infrastructure continues with the laying of resin – we are all looking forward to being able to walk around the site without getting bogged down in mud! Visitors will soon be able to navigate between memorial gardens with ease, when visiting loved one’s final resting places and/or taking time to reflect.

A cheque for £385.65, funds raised for a local charity by the team at Wellingborough’s Crematorium was presented on Tuesday 1 May 2018 by the Company’s Chairperson, Councillor Barry Graves to Cheryl Smith Senior Project Manager and Office Manager Michelle Bathurst DBS Administrator of the Nene Valley Community Action charity, who offer services to front line voluntary and charitable organisations.

The raised funds will be distributed between their projects for: The Befriending Scheme, Carers Support, Purple Pet Power and The School of Life.

These funds are a result of the efforts of the crematorium team, who have been offering comfort for those who are grieving by arranging an annual remembrance service for their loved ones.

Since its opening the team have held three services of this type at the crematorium, where donations were received from attendees, in exchange for personalised messages that were put inside baubles and placed on the remembrance trees.

Similarly, further donations were received from attendees who remained afterwards to enjoy refreshments with the team.

It is the mission of the team to provide exemplary services to bereaved people within the borough and beyond. Meeting their individual need in a caring and sensitive way is of paramount importance to them. The remembrance services were structured in a way to include those of various faiths and those of none.

Cllr Barry Graves, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Wellingborough Bereavement Services, responsible for Nene Valley Crematorium, said: “I am very impressed by the dedication of the team in putting on an event which has offered comfort to so many. The fact that they have also raised money to donate to charities that offer support to those locally is testament to their commitment“.

“Nene Valley Community Action are very pleased to receive this donation from Nene Valley Crematorium. We thank you for your continuing support to the work that NVCA do within the community”.

Manager for the crematorium, Tracy Lawrence, said: “I am very proud of my team for supporting this event with such devotion – we all felt very honoured to be part of it, and were particularity moved by the many meaningful compliments received from those in attendance – remembering in this way is always going to be a poignant time for all involved.”

This year the remembrance service will be held on is Saturday 1 December which, due to previous success, will again be by ticket only at no cost. When times have been confirmed, those who have requested a written signed interest to attend will be invited to reserve their tickets.

May 2021 - Memorial Gardens And Pathways Project Update

         Memorial Gardens and Pathways Project

          Exciting news

The grounds at the crematorium are being developed further to include an infrastructure of pathways around the grounds (Garden of Remembrance) and between individual memorial gardens, existing and new. The project also includes the installation of three new memorial gardens to complement the existing Anniversary and Wendleburie gardens.

The team at the crematorium are very excited about this project, which will provide a more pleasing place to visit aesthetically, enable an additional service offering of choice for bereaved people when thinking about the final resting place for their loved one’s ashes, and/or when choosing a fitting memorial in commemoration.

The vision for the Garden of Remembrance is landscaping of this garden with the creation of additional individual themed memorial gardens within – a garden within a garden concept is our aspiration.

The artists impression shows the three memorial gardens, which are for illustration purposes only because the outcome on a name for these gardens and their appearance may change.

Work commences today, (Monday 10 May) and completion is expected within 15 weeks. In the meantime, watch this space for update during this time.

The Borough Council of Wellingborough’s crematorium team has received Northamptonshire’s Rose Award for services to coronavirus.

To recognise and celebrate the contributions of those who live or work in Northamptonshire, The Lord-Lieutenant of Northamptonshire, The High Sheriff of Northamptonshire and Northamptonshire County Council have jointly launched an ‘Unsung Heroes’ of Northamptonshire’ initiative. This scheme acknowledges the county’s ‘unsung heroes’ response to the Coronavirus Pandemic

For the team at Nene Valley Crematorium, the award is in recognition of the team’s contribution, consisting of: the manager’s leadership in creating an ethos to remain bereavement-led in delivering tailored funerals, balancing keeping communities together, and those most at risk, safe; the team’s flexibility to work when required to enable meaningful funerals to happen, and their overall determination that they have shown when faced with the unprecedented threat from the coronavirus outbreak is celebrated with this award.

The borough council of Wellingborough’s leader, Councillor Martin Griffiths, said: “This is good news, tempered only by the very sad situation with this awful pandemic that is having such a horrible impact on the families of the borough and county. Giving support to bereaved families and showing compassion in these difficult times is so important and the team should all be very proud of their efforts and that their commitment has now been recognised with this award”.

Those who we will continue to serve in providing meaningful funerals and associated services for – always from a bereavement-led and risk-based approach, so that goodbyes to loved ones, despite the pandemic, are kept as normal, as normal can be, which we believe sets us apart from other crematoria during the recent challenging times”.

The team at Nene Valley Crematorium have received an award from the industry’s assessors for excellence, the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM).

Sofia Allana, President at ICCM, presented the gold award to Cllr Barry Graves at the crematorium on Tuesday (18 December).

This prestigious award, which is associated with The Charter for the Bereaved Assessment process for Burial and Cremation, reflects the high standard of service provided at the crematorium. This award comes two years after the crematorium first opened its door and just one year after the team achieved the Bronze accreditation.

The Charter supports the expansion and improvement of services and seeks to educate people about bereavement.

Chairman of Wellingborough Bereavement Services, Cllr Barry Graves, added: “This is a fantastic effort achieving this award in a short period of time and reflects the leadership of Tracy and the dedication of the team at Nene Valley Crematorium.”

Vice-chairman of Wellingborough Bereavement Services, Cllr Tim Maguire, said: “This award recognises and celebrates the high standards of customer care which the team deliver everyday, while providing information and choice for our residents. I would like to congratulate them on their success.”

Leader of the Borough Council of Wellingborough, Cllr Martin Griffiths, said: “Winning prominent industry awards such as this in a relatively short period of time shows what can be achieved when we all work together to deliver a successful project. This much-loved facility will be a benefit for our residents for years to come.”

Manager at the crematorium, Tracy Lawrence, said: “The team’s hard work during the past year is a clear demonstration of not only the commitment they continually provide day to day, but also when working on the extras, like delivering on their promise of last year when achieving bronze standard: ‘to improve services’. And they have – Bronze to Gold, a significant achievement. I feel very proud be part of a dedicated team who believe in what they do to ensure their recipients’ needs are accommodated for, with the upmost care”.

Nene Valley Crematorium opened its doors to the local community on Saturday (14 December), providing people the opportunity to come together and remember loved ones at a candle-lit service.

Friends and family came together to remember loved ones who had passed away during the previous 12 months in two ceremonies led by ceremony leaders of a range of faiths, and those of none.

Visitors had an opportunity to write messages to loved ones and place this within a bauble on the remembrance trees, which will remain in the ceremony hall throughout the festive period.

Chairman for the Board of Directors at Nene Valley Crematorium, Cllr Paul Bell, said:

“Christmas is often a time of remembrance and reflection and these special services provided family and friends who have lost a loved one this year with the opportunity to commemorate those that they’ve lost in a peaceful environment.”

Crematorium Manager Tracy Lawrence said: “It is important to provide those that have lost family and friends with the chance to remember their loved ones at a peaceful candle-lit service like this. The first Christmas without those they love can be difficult, and we hope in some small way that the messages conveyed by ceremony leaders, and music played on Saturday, helped.”

Nene Valley Crematorium opened in September 2016 and is operated by Wellingborough Bereavement Services Limited.

A ground-breaking ceremony will take place on Tuesday 21 July to mark the start of work on Wellingborough Council’s new crematorium.

Main contractor Wates Construction is now on the 11-acre site near Great Doddington carrying out the first phase of works to build the £5.5m facility.

Representatives from both Wellingborough Council and Wates will attend the ceremony on Tuesday for photo and interview opportunities.

The crematorium project was first discussed by councillors back in 2011. After extensive research and consultation, detailed planning permission was unanimously granted in January this year. The facility is on track to be opened next summer.

Leader of Wellingborough Council, Cllr Paul Bell, said: “It’s great to see work begin on this project. This is a facility that is welcomed by everyone we’ve spoken to.

“We’re really pleased with the final plans. We’ll have a modern building with the latest equipment, but blending into the landscape and set in gardens and woodland, with beautiful views over the valley.

“To see those plans start to become reality is very exciting.”

Richard Scarrott, Business Unit Director, Wates Construction Midlands, said: “We have worked closely with the council to develop plans for the new crematorium, which has given us a thorough understanding of their vision for a building that is sympathetic to the surrounding landscape. We are keen to ensure that this project creates lasting benefit for the local community, part of which is our appointment of local suppliers and sub-contractors to support our project delivery.”

The project will see the creation of a new 465 sq m crematorium facility with a 120-seat chapel, a 98-space car park and external landscaping, including an area for floral tributes.

The cost of the project – around £1.3m for the land and £4.2m for the build – is being met out of the council’s capital budget, which is money in the bank saved for large-scale projects that benefit the community and provide investment opportunities. Capital funds can’t by law be used to pay for day-to-day services, but income generated from capital projects can.

Cllr Bell added: “We set aside the capital budget for this project as it’s not only something people have told us they want, but because it will also bring in an income. We can use this to help provide services in the borough.”

The project has been procured through the East Midlands Property Alliance (empa), which is managed by Scape and was established in 2008 by local authorities to improve the cost-efficiency of property services for local communities.

Alan Coole, head of empa, said: “This is a key project for the people of Wellingborough who will benefit from this new facility once it’s complete. By working closely with public-sector bodies like Wellingborough Council we can help make sure the council receives the best value for money possible through our approved construction partners that use local employers and supply chains.

Leading contractor, Wates Construction, has reached the completion of the Borough Council of Wellingborough’s £4.5m single-storey crematorium at Doddington Road a month ahead of schedule.

Designed by Tweedale architects, the work has included the creation of a 120-seat chapel, offices and meeting room facilities.

Wates’ delivery of the 465m2 project has also seen the contractor carry-out landscaping work to the exterior of the development to create areas for floral tributes and 89 standard and 9 disabled car parking spaces.

Over the course of the project, Wates has engaged a total of 220 pupils in the area and created approximately ten employment and training opportunities, whilst providing 65 courses in health and safety, professional development and sustainability.

The work has also seen the contractor appoint a local supply chain, with £2.5m spent with local subcontractors and suppliers.

The project was procured through the East Midlands Property Alliance (empa) framework, which is managed by Scape Group and aims to improve the procurement and delivery of building works for public sector bodies.

Phil Harrison, Managing Director, Wates Construction Midlands and North said: “To have reached early completion on such a complex and specialist building is an incredible achievement, which is in-part a result of the close partnership our team has cultivated with the Borough Council of Wellingborough.

“The investment at Wellingborough Crematorium has brought with it a significant opportunity to enhance local employment and training, fulfilling a commitment shared by Wates and our partners at the East Midlands Property Alliance.”

Nene Valley Crematorium – progress update March 2017

After six very busy months Nene Valley Crematorium in Wellingborough is taking a breath to think about what the next half year will look like. As with all new businesses there have been some testing times, but the patience and support of local families, ceremony leaders and funeral directors has been phenomenal. The number of cremations has surpassed expectations, proving that people in the borough – and outside – are pleased with the possibility of saying goodbye to loved ones in a convenient and peaceful location. We have had difficulties, but each time they have been overcome: there were teething problems with our cremator in the early days, which were quickly resolved; Storm Doris blew part of the roof off; and – very sadly – a mourner died during a funeral service. We have even been joined by a small flock of sheep from time to time. The key for us is learning from all the challenges that face us, and getting better as we go.

As we enter our next six months we are looking at two exciting developments: we already have a state of the art music system, but have purchased an organ to offer a choice for families who prefer live music during a funeral service; and our memorial gardens are in the final stages of planning, which include final resting places for the scattering of ashes.

The Manager/Registrar’s current focus is to recruit a permanent team, where she is looking to find caring and dedicated individuals who are meticulous and methodical, and wish to make a difference to those who are grieving.
